November 10, 2025: Amid rising opposition from residents ahead of the civic polls, BJP MLA Vidya Thakur met Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials on Friday to discuss alternatives to demolishing the seven-year-old Veer Savarkar flyover on S.V. Road in Goregaon. The officials informed Thakur that BMC is examining the feasibility of using the monopile construction method — the same technology deployed for the Mumbai Coastal Road (South) — for the proposed connector linking the Coastal Road (North) with the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR).
If found viable, this method could prevent the demolition of the flyover, which has been a key traffic decongestant for Goregaon and nearby areas since its inauguration in 2018. Built at a cost of Rs 27 crore, the structure, also known as the MTNL flyover, faces removal to make way for a double-decker bridge connecting the Malad-Mindspace stretch of the Coastal Road (North) to Dindoshi.
The monopile construction technique involves driving a single, large-diameter reinforced concrete pile deep into the ground, providing a strong and space-efficient foundation. It was earlier used in the southern section of the Coastal Road, where the piles serve as key supports for elevated structures.
A BMC official said, “Works from the Dindoshi end of this connector have already begun, with 23 piles constructed so far. However, as the Dindoshi court is located in the area, work timing is restricted. We want to complete the piling work as soon as possible, as a part of the GMLR connector is coming along the same alignment.” The official added that the consultant has been instructed to study the monopile method and submit a feasibility report to IIT-Bombay.
Thakur, in a letter to BMC and the Chief Minister, wrote, “Considering that nearly Rs 27 crore was spent on its construction just seven years ago, the proposed demolition has generated widespread opposition. Therefore, I request that instead of demolishing it, the flyover should be integrated into the Coastal Road project.”
