Two Key Mumbai Metro Stretches Set To Open By December 31, Boosting Connectivity Across The City

December 5, 2025: Mumbai’s metro network is nearing another major expansion as two new stretches are expected to become operational by the end of December, significantly improving travel efficiency for commuters. According to updates shared by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Dahisar–Kashigaon section of Metro Line 9 and the Diamond Garden–Mandale stretch of Metro Line 2B are likely to open by December 31.

The development comes as the city continues to benefit from the recently completed final phase of the Aqua Line (Metro 3), which has already helped cut travel time between North and South Mumbai. Authorities believe that the upcoming openings will further ease congestion, enhance last-mile connectivity, and strengthen the overall public transport ecosystem. With each new corridor, Mumbai’s metro network is steadily evolving into a more dependable and cost-effective daily commuting option.

The upcoming launch includes a portion of Metro Line 9, an extension of Line 7, that will connect Dahisar East to Kashigaon. Earlier, on November 20, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed that the Dahisar–Kashimira section on Line 7 is also being targeted for inauguration before year-end. These additions form a crucial part of the broader plan to improve mobility throughout the northern suburbs and reduce road traffic.

Metro Line 9 spans approximately 13.58 kilometres and combines elevated and underground sections. It will feature key stations such as Dahisar, Miragaon, Pandhurang Wadi, Kashigaon, Sai Baba Nagar, Meditiya Nagar, Shahid Bhagat Singh Garden and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium. The Andheri East–CSIA stretch will include Airport Colony and an underground station at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, providing significantly improved airport access for passengers.

Metro Line 2B, running from D N Nagar to Mandale, is a fully elevated 23.64-kilometre corridor with 20 proposed stations. While only the Diamond Garden–Mandale stretch is set to open now, the full line will eventually link Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs more seamlessly. Station locations span major nodes Including ESIC Nagar, National College, Bandra Metro, Kurla East, Chembur, Shivaji Chowk and BSNL Metro. Once the entire line becomes operational, it will offer vital east-west connectivity and support thousands of commuters navigating daily across the metropolitan region.
