NHAI Starts Rs 100 Crore Morbe–Kalamboli Link To Strengthen Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway Connectivity

December 13, 2025: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun work on a 14 km road linking Morbe to Kalamboli via Taloja, aimed at improving freight movement from the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). The project is designed to ease congestion, shorten travel time for commercial vehicles, and strengthen logistics efficiency across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The initiative comes against the backdrop of repeated delays in the MSRDC’s Virar–Alibaug corridor, originally planned as a southern peripheral route. With the project yet to move beyond the planning stage, NHAI has opted for a shorter and more practical alternative to meet immediate traffic and freight requirements.

Estimated at Rs 100 crore, the Morbe–Kalamboli link has received approval from the state secretariat. The allocated budget will cover road widening, surfacing, and associated infrastructure, ensuring quality construction while keeping costs in check. By adopting a cost-effective design, NHAI aims to deliver faster results without compromising standards.

The new road is expected to significantly enhance peripheral connectivity by linking the expressway with Atal Setu, Navi Mumbai, and the upcoming airport. Industrial zones, logistics hubs, and transport corridors will benefit from improved access, enabling smoother movement of goods and reducing pressure on existing urban roads.

Most of the alignment passes through the Taloja MIDC industrial area. NHAI plans to construct a new 4 km stretch between Morbe and Taloja, while widening and upgrading around 10 km of existing roads up to Kalamboli. This phased approach minimizes disruption and accelerates completion.

The Morbe–Kalamboli road is part of the larger Delhi–Mumbai Corridor, of which the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway is a key section. The eight-lane, access-controlled expressway is reportedly around 70% complete, with major structures nearing readiness. Once operational, the new link will enable seamless freight movement to JNPA, easing congestion and supporting Mumbai’s role as a major logistics and trade hub.
