Nine New Standalone BMC School Buildings Set To Open Across Mumbai By 2026–27

December 17, 2025: In a significant push to strengthen municipal education infrastructure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to operationalise nine standalone school buildings in time for the 2026–27 academic year. The new facilities will come up across key neighbourhoods, including Ghatkopar, Govandi, Andheri, Juhu, and Malad, reflecting the civic body’s renewed focus on upgrading BMC-run schools.

Except for one newly constructed CBSE-affiliated school in Andheri East, all the upcoming institutions are redeveloped structures built on the sites of former municipal schools. Civic officials said the reconstruction process for these schools took between three and five years, depending on site conditions and regulatory approvals. The Juhu school required the longest time for completion as it is located within the Coastal Regulation Zone, necessitating additional clearances.

Apart from serving as permanent standalone schools, the new buildings will also play a transitional role in the coming years. They are expected to temporarily accommodate students from nearby municipal schools that are currently undergoing redevelopment, ensuring continuity in education while construction work is underway elsewhere.

Kondivita Mumbai Public School in Andheri East will operate as an independent CBSE school, in line with affiliation norms that permit only one school per building. The remaining redeveloped institutions will function under the Maharashtra State Board framework.

Designed to offer a modern learning environment, several of the new school buildings are equipped with upgraded amenities such as libraries, virtual classrooms, computer and science laboratories, art and craft rooms, multipurpose halls, and disability-friendly washrooms. These features are aimed at improving learning outcomes and making municipal schools more inclusive and attractive to parents.

Highlighting the need for additional capacity, a civic official said, “All these areas are witnessing a steady rise in student population. These new buildings will help us absorb more students into the BMC school system,” underscoring the role of infrastructure expansion in meeting growing educational demand across Mumbai.
