Mulund East–West Foot Overbridge Nears Completion, Promising Safer And Faster Daily Commutes

December 19, 2025: The long-awaited Mulund East–West foot overbridge (FOB) is nearing completion, offering a major boost to pedestrian connectivity and safety in one of Mumbai’s busiest suburbs. Designed to bridge the long-standing divide between Mulund’s eastern and western precincts, the project aims to provide commuters with a safe, direct crossing over the railway tracks, eliminating the need for dangerous track crossings or time-consuming detours.

According to officials, the main structural work of the FOB has been completed, and the project has now entered its final phase. Finishing works such as flooring, roofing, railings, and lighting are currently underway. Once these installations are completed, the bridge will undergo mandatory safety checks and inspections before being opened to the public.

Located strategically close to Mulund railway station, the FOB is expected to serve thousands of daily users, including office commuters, students, small traders, and local residents. By offering a direct east–west link, it will significantly ease movement between residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas on both sides of the tracks.

Pedestrian safety has been a central focus of the design. The bridge features anti-skid flooring, protective railings, and adequate lighting to ensure secure movement during peak hours, late evenings, and monsoon conditions. Accessibility has also been prioritised, with wide staircases and carefully planned entry and exit points to accommodate senior citizens, children, and commuters carrying luggage or work bags.

Once operational, the FOB is expected to substantially reduce trespassing and jaywalking across railway tracks—an issue that has long posed safety risks in the area. The improved pedestrian flow is also likely to ease congestion on nearby roads and reduce pressure on existing crossings.

The project is being implemented through close coordination between civic authorities and the railways, with regular monitoring to ensure construction quality and compliance with safety standards. Officials indicated that the bridge will be opened to the public shortly after final inspections are completed, marking an important step toward safer and more efficient urban mobility in Mulund.
