Mumbai To Get New Haj House In Kharghar Ahead Of Navi Mumbai Airport Operations

December 22, 2025: Mumbai is set to get a new Haj House at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, a development expected to significantly ease travel and accommodation arrangements for Muslim pilgrims once the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) becomes operational. The proposed facility is part of the Ministry of Minority Affairs’ broader push to modernise Haj-related infrastructure and improve support systems for pilgrims.

According to a press release issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Minority Affairs, recently inspected the proposed site at Kharghar along with officials from the Haj Committee of India (HCoI) and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). During the visit, officials reviewed the design and layout of the new Haj House and discussed timelines, technical specifications, and execution strategies.

Key aspects such as connectivity to transport hubs, logistics planning, and pilgrim-friendly amenities were also examined to ensure the facility effectively caters to the needs of Haj pilgrims travelling from the Mumbai metropolitan region, especially with NMIA expected to handle a significant share of future international departures.

Mumbai currently has a Haj House near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), which functions as a lodging and transit facility managed by the Haj Committee of India. It provides accommodation for pilgrims, conducts orientation programmes for first-time Hajis, assists with documentation such as visas and passports, facilitates health screenings and vaccinations, and offers dining facilities. The building also houses administrative offices and includes a “Coaching & Guidance Cell” that runs educational support programmes for the wider Muslim community.

The new Haj House at Kharghar is expected to complement these services by offering improved access and capacity closer to Navi Mumbai.

The NMIA was inaugurated on October 8, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with full commercial operations expected to begin by December 2025. Developed over 1,160 hectares, the airport’s first phase will handle around 20 million passengers annually, eventually scaling up to 90 million passengers with additional runways and terminals. The new airport is expected to ease congestion at the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and enhance regional connectivity.
