December 29, 2025: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up efforts to manage air quality by launching an extensive deep-cleaning drive across some of the city’s busiest road networks. Acting on directives issued by the municipal commissioner during a recent review meeting, the civic body has prioritised high-traffic corridors such as the Sion–Panvel Highway, the MIDC South Central Road, along with several important internal roads and footpaths.
The initiative focuses on removing accumulated soil and dust along road edges, dividers and pedestrian zones—key contributors to airborne pollution. The collected debris is transported away from the sites, after which the roads and footpaths are thoroughly washed using treated water to prevent dust from becoming airborne again. The operation combines mechanised cleaning equipment with manual labour to ensure comprehensive coverage.
To ensure strict on-ground execution, engineers from the engineering department have been deployed alongside sanitation officers, as per the commissioner’s instructions. The drive continued even on Sunday, covering major arterial stretches, internal roads and critical sections of the Sion–Panvel Highway and MIDC areas.
Under the supervision of the city engineer, mechanised cleaning was carried out on the Sion–Panvel Highway between Vashi and Belapur. This involved brushing and removing roadside soil, followed by washing the carriageway with treated water. On the opposite stretch—from Belapur to Vashi, including flyover sections—the solid waste management department deployed more than 250 sanitation workers to carry out intensive manual cleaning.
Senior civic officials closely monitored the operations, with sanitation officers, inspectors and field teams actively involved. Similar mechanised and manpower-supported cleaning activities were conducted along the MIDC South Central Road.
The drive also extended to other important routes, including Ghansoli Palm Beach Road, the road near Chetak Mithaiwala, the stretch behind Kamla Market at Ghothivli, and major roads in Koparkhairane sectors 10, 11 and 12.
NMMC is using mechanical sweepers, flipper machines and jetting sprays, along with vehicles that spray treated water into the air to suppress dust. The civic body said such sustained, field-level pollution control measures are being implemented rigorously to ensure lasting improvements in Navi Mumbai’s air quality.
