Mumbai–Thane Metro Line 4A Nears Launch As Construction Concludes, Safety Clearances Underway

The Mumbai–Thane Metro Line 4A has reached a significant milestone, with construction work fully completed and the project entering its final stage of inspections, testing and safety certification. The development brings the metro corridor closer to public operations and marks another step forward in strengthening Mumbai’s rapidly expanding metro network.

Metro Line 4A forms part of the larger Metro Line 4 and 4A corridor that will connect Gaimukh in Thane to Wadala in Mumbai. The newly completed section spans the crucial Gaimukh–Cadbury Junction stretch, an area that currently witnesses severe traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. The corridor is expected to substantially improve connectivity between Mumbai and Thane while easing pressure on heavily congested road networks.

Officials confirmed that all major structural work along this section has been completed. Finishing work, including installation of escalators, elevators, ticketing infrastructure, electrical systems, signalling and communication networks, is in its final phase. Construction at most metro stations along the stretch is nearly complete, with only minor tasks pending and progressing swiftly.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has submitted the project for technical and safety inspections to the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO). After RDSO completes its assessment, the metro corridor will undergo statutory safety certification followed by mandatory trial runs. These approvals are essential before the commencement of passenger services.

Once operational, Metro Line 4A is expected to significantly cut travel time between Mumbai and Thane to around 15 to 20 minutes, offering commuters a faster and more reliable transit option compared to road travel. The corridor is also projected to reduce traffic congestion, curb vehicular emissions and enhance overall mobility across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Authorities have indicated that passenger services are likely to begin in the coming months, with the official launch date to be announced after completion of all safety inspections and regulatory approvals.
