Navi Mumbai Civic Body Demolishes Unauthorised Structures In Belapur Division

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has carried out a demolition drive against unauthorised constructions in the Belapur division, intensifying its enforcement efforts to curb illegal development across the city. The action was undertaken following directions from Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and was supervised by Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad.

According to civic officials, the drive was conducted by the NMMC encroachment department after occupants failed to comply with notices issued under provisions of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. The operation covered several residential and temporary structures located in Belapur village, CBD Belapur and adjoining areas, which were found to violate approved development norms.

The civic body stated that multiple notices had earlier been served under Sections 53(1)(a) and 54 of the MRTP Act. These included action against unauthorised constructions at house number 395 near NMMC School No. 01 in Belapur village, Sector 20, CBD Belapur; house number 0390 in Belapur village; and house number 279/005 near Potdar School in Karave village, Sector 36. Despite being directed to remove the illegal structures voluntarily, inspections revealed that the notices had not been complied with.

In addition, unauthorised temporary monsoon sheds erected at Suncity Building in Sector 15 were also identified. As the concerned parties did not dismantle the structures on their own, the Belapur division office organised a demolition drive on February 4, 2026.

The operation was led by Assistant Commissioner and Divisional Officer Prashant Nerkar, along with Assistant Engineer Atmaram Kale and other officials and staff of the Belapur division. The demolition involved substantial manpower and machinery, including labourers, gas cutters, hammers, a poklane machine and JCBs. Personnel from the local police department and the NMMC encroachment wing were deployed to maintain law and order during the exercise.

NMMC officials said similar enforcement action would continue in the coming period to deter unauthorised construction, protect public land and ensure adherence to planned urban development across Navi Mumbai.
