184 Trees To Be Cut As Versova’s Nana-Nani Park Makes Way For Sea Link Exit Works

Excavation work for the Versova exit of the Bandra–Versova Sea Link has begun inside Nana-Nani Park in Versova, with digging underway for five to six pillars over the past two days. The construction marks the start of a revised design for the project, which will now see an elevated road built above the park, supported by pillars within its premises.

Earlier plans had proposed the complete removal of the park, triggering protests by residents in August 2025. Following public opposition, the design was modified to retain the park space beneath the elevated structure. However, under the updated proposal, 184 trees are slated to be cut and another 164 transplanted. Permissions have been granted under the Tree Protection Act, and all affected trees have already been marked.

Nana-Nani Park has served as a community space for more than two decades, drawing an estimated 90 to 130 visitors daily. The park hosts weekly karaoke sessions for senior citizens and features an open gym, making it a regular gathering point for local residents. Many now hope that despite the ongoing construction, the character and usability of the green space will be preserved.

Authorities including the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were contacted regarding timelines for tree cutting and the safeguards planned during construction, but had not responded at the time of publication.

Residents have voiced concern about the long-term impact of the project. Anil Nair, a long-time local resident, said, “When I was growing up, this park didn’t exist. Over the past 20 years, it has become a peaceful space where I walk with friends. Though we are sceptical of what will happen once the park is closed and the work actually begins.”
