Iron Rod Rebounds At Worli–Sewri Corridor Site, Injures Pedestrian Near KEM Hospital

A pedestrian was hurt on Friday after an iron rod ricocheted off a barricade at an under-construction stretch of the Worli–Sewri elevated corridor near KEM Hospital.

Officials said reinforcement activity was in progress when the incident occurred. During the structural work, an iron rod being used at the site reportedly slipped and fell from above. Instead of dropping straight onto the roadway, the rod first collided with a protective barricade installed around the construction area. The force of the impact caused it to rebound sharply — described as a boomerang-like motion — before striking a passer-by on the head.

The injured man suffered a head wound and required four stitches. He was immediately taken to Gleneagles Hospital for initial medical attention. Subsequently, he was transferred to Global Hospital in Parel for further care. Doctors have stated that his condition is stable.

The episode has once again drawn attention to safety protocols at major infrastructure sites, especially in zones where pedestrian and vehicular movement continues alongside construction work. While barricades are meant to shield the public from falling debris, the unusual rebound in this case has prompted questions about the adequacy of current preventive measures.

Authorities are believed to be examining how the rod slipped and whether additional safeguards are necessary to prevent similar mishaps. The elevated corridor project is a key urban connectivity initiative, but Friday’s accident underscores the importance of strict on-site safety enforcement to protect both workers and the public.
