Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase 1 Ready For Rollout, Dahisar–Kashigaon Stretch To Decongest WEH

Mumbai’s expanding metro network is set to grow further, with the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 9 nearing public launch. The 4.97-kilometre section connecting Dahisar East to Kashigaon in Mira Road is likely to open in March after the conclusion of the state budget session.

The stretch has secured mandatory safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), indicating that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is operationally prepared to begin passenger services.

An extension of the Red Line, the new corridor will deliver the first metro-based rapid transit link to Mira-Bhayandar. Once complete, the entire 13.58-kilometre Line 9 route will comprise 10 stations, largely elevated, with a short underground portion near the airport. The line will connect with key transport arteries, including the Western Express Highway, Western Railway, Metro Line 2A and Metro Line 7, strengthening multi-modal integration in the western suburbs.

A primary goal of the project is to ease chronic traffic bottlenecks at Dahisar Check Naka and along the Western Express Highway — areas that have long struggled with severe congestion. Officials expect a substantial shift of commuters from road to rail, potentially cutting travel time between Mumbai and parts of Thane district by as much as 75%, depending on traffic conditions.

The initial phase will include four stations: Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon and Kashigaon. For residents reliant on overcrowded local trains and jam-packed roads, the metro promises a faster and more dependable commuting option. Seamless interchange with Metro Lines 7 and 2A at Dahisar East will also provide direct connectivity to major employment hubs along the Western Express Highway and Andheri.

Trial runs have concluded successfully, and observations raised during the CMRS inspection have been addressed. The remaining portion extending to Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Bhayandar is expected to be completed by year-end. With an estimated project cost of Rs 6,607 crore, Line 9 marks another significant milestone in enhancing mobility across Mumbai’s northern suburbs.
