Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday (March 1, 2026) said ties between Maharashtra and Canada are entering a new phase of growth anchored in investment, innovation and shared economic opportunity.
He was addressing a special reception in Mumbai for a Canadian delegation that included François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of National Revenue; Susan Holt, Premier of New Brunswick; and other senior representatives. A day earlier, Mr. Fadnavis had also hosted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during his official visit to India.
Investment and education focus
“The world today faces the dual challenge of ensuring environmental conservation while progressing amid the climate change crisis. Maharashtra, too, is addressing climate change while continuing on its path of development. There are numerous opportunities for Canada to invest in Maharashtra,” Mr. Fadnavis said, inviting Canadian universities and entrepreneurs to explore prospects across the State.
The event was attended by Canadian delegates, university representatives, Indian CEOs, entrepreneurs and senior officials. Positioning Maharashtra as a prime destination for global investment, the Chief Minister highlighted major infrastructure initiatives across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and emphasised the State’s demographic strength.
“Nearly 60% of Maharashtra’s population is below the age of 27. A significant number of students from the State pursue higher education in Canada. Therefore, Canadian universities should establish campuses in Navi Mumbai’s upcoming EduCity,” he said.
AI, technology and climate finance
Mr. Fadnavis also pointed to Canada’s achievements in artificial intelligence, advanced technologies and environmental stewardship, backed by institutional support. “Canada has made remarkable progress in artificial intelligence, advanced technology, and environmental conservation, with strong institutional support from its government. On similar lines, the Maharashtra Government is working in areas such as data centres, Global Capability Centres, and startups to shape the future of the State,” he said, noting that the government recently hosted a global conference on AI in agriculture.
Highlighting climate finance as a priority, he said Maharashtra is ambitious and ready to pursue new growth avenues.
During his Mumbai visit, Mr. Carney participated in business meetings with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry leaders, financial experts, innovators, educators and representatives of Canadian pension funds operating in India before departing for New Delhi on March 1.
