Mumbai–Vijaydurg Ro-Pax Service Launched, Promises Quicker, Affordable Konkan Travel

Sea travel between Mumbai and the Konkan coast received a major boost on Sunday with the launch of the Mumbai–Vijaydurg Ro-Pax ferry service. The inaugural sailing was flagged off by Maharashtra Minister for Fisheries and Ports Development Nitesh Rane, marking a new chapter in coastal connectivity.

The maiden voyage drew an enthusiastic response from travellers and tourists. Adding a cultural touch to the occasion, noted Konkan Bhajan singer Pramod Dhuri performed devotional songs and traditional rituals as the vessel departed, creating a festive and spiritual atmosphere onboard.

Positioned as part of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ broader push for infrastructure and maritime expansion, the service is expected to significantly cut travel time and costs compared to road journeys. The voyage between Mumbai and Vijaydurg will take approximately six to seven hours, offering a faster alternative to existing land routes.

The Ro-Pax vessel can accommodate around 625 passengers per trip, along with 40 cars and 25 two-wheelers. It is fitted with advanced navigation technology, modern safety systems and comfortable seating arrangements to ensure a secure and pleasant journey.

Officials believe the service will stimulate tourism, fisheries, small-scale industries and local trade across the Konkan belt. It is also likely to benefit Mumbai residents who frequently travel to the coastal region.

Meanwhile, the State is preparing to roll out the Mumbai Water Metro project in phases beginning December. The initiative proposes six to eight electric ferry routes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region at an estimated cost of ₹1,200 crore.

“We have decided to start with Mumbai city and then expand to the wider MMR, which includes adjoining districts,” Rane said.

Within the city, services are planned along the Nariman Point–Worli–Bandra–Juhu–Versova corridor. “We plan to take up two routes in the first phase,” he added.

The twin initiatives underscore Maharashtra’s efforts to strengthen maritime transport and ease urban congestion through sustainable coastal mobility solutions.
