Coastal Road (North) & GMLR On Track To Transform Mumbai Connectivity Before 2029

Two of Mumbai’s flagship infrastructure ventures — the Coastal Road (North) and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) — are advancing as per schedule and are projected to be completed well before 2029, according to timelines outlined in the 2026–27 budget of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The completion window aligns with the forthcoming Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly elections, underlining the projects’ prominence in the civic development roadmap.

Mirroring the rollout of the Mumbai Coastal Road (South), which saw phased openings beginning in March 2024 ahead of the general elections, the BMC has targeted July 2029 for the completion of Coastal Road (North). The GMLR is slated to be operational earlier, with a projected finish date in 2028.

The Coastal Road (North) will run from the Versova Interchange to the Dahisar Interchange. Additionally, an elevated connector linking the Mindspace Malad Junction on the Coastal Road to the starting point of the GMLR in Goregaon (East) has been proposed. Together, these corridors are expected to significantly improve connectivity between South Mumbai, the western suburbs and the northeastern belt, including Mulund and Thane, thereby strengthening both north-south and east-west travel routes.

The civic body has confirmed that all necessary statutory and environmental clearances have been secured. Approvals have been obtained from the Maharashtra Maritime Board, the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Mangroves Cell. The Bombay High Court has also granted clearance, ensuring legal compliance.

Once completed, these projects are expected to ease congestion, shorten commute times and support Mumbai’s broader urban transformation goals, while marking significant milestones in the city’s infrastructure agenda ahead of the 2029 elections.
