Byculla Cable-Stayed Bridge Nears Completion, Set To Open Before Monsoon

The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MahaRail) has announced that the cable-stayed road overbridge in Byculla is in its final stages and is expected to be opened to the public before the onset of the monsoon. With nearly 80% of the work completed, the project is set to significantly improve east–west connectivity in the area.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 287 crore, the new bridge is being developed alongside the existing century-old Byculla road overbridge. The project will expand the corridor from two lanes to four lanes, offering a more efficient and weather-resilient route for commuters, particularly during Mumbai’s heavy rains.

The bridge spans a total length of 916 metres, including approach roads, with a height of 9.70 metres and a central pylon rising 50 metres. It is designed to handle four lanes of traffic and includes several modern features such as decorative and remote-controlled LED lighting, a dedicated selfie point, and an integrated three-tier utility duct system built into the crash barriers to improve safety and functionality.

The structure will also be illuminated in tricolour lighting on national occasions like Independence Day and Republic Day. Engineers are currently executing one of the most complex phases of construction over the busy Byculla vegetable market and active railway tracks using Double Eye-Cell (DEC) technology.

Once operational, the new bridge will be connected to one arm of the existing ‘Y’ bridge, ensuring seamless traffic movement towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus without disrupting current routes. The old bridge will subsequently undergo strengthening works.

MahaRail officials said the project aims to deliver a safer, faster and more efficient commuting experience for Mumbaikars, while also adding a visually distinctive landmark to the city’s infrastructure.

MahaRail is a joint venture between the Government of Maharashtra and the Ministry of Railways, focusing on developing critical rail and road infrastructure across the state, including bridges, flyovers and new rail corridors.
