Large portions of Mahim Beach remain in darkness after sunset due to several non-functional streetlights, according to local activists. The issue has sparked concerns over public safety, particularly for residents and visitors who frequent the stretch in the evenings.
Social worker Syed M. Ismail has urged both the BEST electricity wing and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to take immediate steps to repair and upgrade the lighting infrastructure at Reti Bunder Beach in Mahim. He has cautioned that inadequate illumination poses a serious risk to public safety. Government officials were unavailable for comment.
Activists highlighted that poor lighting conditions have created an unsafe environment, especially during evening hours when footfall remains high. Families, walkers, and residents visiting the beach are reportedly having difficulty navigating the area due to poor visibility.
They warned that a lack of proper lighting could increase the risk of untoward incidents or criminal activity. At present, only a handful of streetlights are operational, leaving significant stretches of the beach poorly lit.
In addition to repairing the faulty lights, Ismail has called for installing additional streetlight poles, particularly in the inner sections of Reti Bunder Beach. Activists believe that improving illumination across the entire stretch is essential to ensure safer access and restore public confidence in the area as a recreational space.
