Delhi–Mumbai Expressway Nears 2026 Target, Gujarat Delays Push Full Completion To 2028

India’s ambitious Delhi–Mumbai Expressway is largely progressing as planned, with most sections expected to be completed by 2026. However, delays in select construction packages in Gujarat are likely to push the completion of parts of the corridor to March 2028, according to information shared in Parliament.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the project is being executed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, spanning Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat before terminating in Mumbai.

The expressway has been divided into 54 construction packages covering a total length of 1,445 km. Out of this, 929 km has already been made operational. A key segment, the Delhi–Vadodara stretch, measures 912 km, of which 697 km is complete, while 215 km remains under construction. The government has set June 2026 as the target for completing this portion.

“The Government has taken up the implementation of Delhi-Mumbai Expressway under the Bharatmala Pariyojana which passes through the States of Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, and terminates in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The implementation of this corridor, including its spur connectivity, has been taken up in 54 construction packages covering a total length of 1,445 km, out of which 929 km has been operationalised,” Gadkari said.

However, progress on the Vadodara–Mumbai stretch has been slower, particularly in Gujarat, where Packages 8, 9, and 10 have faced delays largely due to contractor-related issues.

“The construction progress of the corridor, including that of Packages 8, 9 and 10 of the Vadodara-Mumbai section in the State of Gujarat, has been affected mainly due to delays on part of Contractor. These packages in the State of Gujarat are targeted for completion by March, 2028 while other packages would be completed in 2026,” the minister said.

The total sanctioned cost of the expressway stands at ₹96,547 crore, with ₹77,558 crore already spent as of December 2025.
