BMC Eyes Faster Travel With 5.5 Km Expressway Parallel To WEH

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a 5.5-km greenfield expressway aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity across Mumbai. The planned corridor will link Goregaon’s Film City to Magathane, running parallel to the Western Express Highway (WEH).

This proposed route is part of the larger Mumbai Coastal Road (North) project and is designed to connect the Versova-Dahisar-Bhayandar Link Road (VDBLR) with the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR). The integration of these major infrastructure projects is expected to create a seamless east-west transit corridor across the city and suburbs.

Under the plan, vehicles will be able to travel directly from the Coastal Road to Magathane. From there, commuters can access the GMLR via twin tunnels currently being developed beneath Film City in Goregaon. This will enable uninterrupted connectivity to Mulund in the eastern suburbs and extend further towards Airoli, significantly improving cross-city travel efficiency.

Civic officials stated that the primary objective of the project is to connect key arterial roads and high-speed corridors, thereby reducing pressure on Mumbai’s already congested expressways. Once operational, the expressway is expected to cut travel time dramatically, bringing down commutes that currently exceed an hour to just around 10 minutes.

While the BMC has completed the planning stage for the project, certain encroachments along the proposed alignment still need to be cleared before work can begin. Following this, detailed cost estimates will be finalised and tenders will be invited.

The civic body aims to complete the project within the next three years. Once finished, the expressway is expected to significantly strengthen Mumbai’s transport network and provide faster, more efficient connectivity between key residential and commercial hubs.
