Sion Hospital To Get 13-Storey Cancer Facility Under Phase 2 Redevelopment

Mumbai’s public healthcare infrastructure is set for a major upgrade as Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital prepares to add a 13-storey dedicated cancer treatment facility under its Phase 2 redevelopment. The project aims to significantly expand access to affordable oncology care for patients across the country.

The foundation stone for the redevelopment will be laid on March 27, 2026, at the hospital campus in Sion. The event will be led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, along with other senior officials and public representatives.

A key component of the project is the new oncology block, designed as a 13-storey structure housing around 200 beds. The facility will provide comprehensive cancer care, including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and intensive care services. It will be equipped with advanced technologies such as linear accelerators, along with specialised chemotherapy isolation wards, modern operation theatres, and recovery units.

In addition, the centre will offer high-end diagnostic services such as PET scans, MRI, and CT scans, along with treatments including brachytherapy and radiotherapy. The initiative is focused on ensuring that patients can access quality cancer care at minimal or no cost under government health schemes.

The larger redevelopment plan will also expand the hospital’s overall infrastructure. A 15-storey main building with 2,200 beds, a 14-storey emergency services block for trauma and critical care, and a separate 13-storey outpatient department are part of the proposal. Once completed, the hospital’s total capacity will rise to 3,286 beds.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the project reflects its commitment to strengthening public healthcare and delivering modern, accessible medical services to the city’s growing population.
