Orange Gate–Marine Drive Tunnel May Cut Travel Time To 5 Minutes

A major underground road project in Mumbai is set to significantly improve east–west connectivity, with the proposed Orange Gate–Marine Drive tunnel expected to reduce travel time between the two points to just five minutes.

The project, being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, is regarded as one of India’s most technically challenging urban tunnelling initiatives. Once completed, the tunnel will offer a seamless, signal-free link between Orange Gate on the Eastern Freeway and Marine Drive, easing congestion on existing routes and improving overall traffic flow.

Designed to address Mumbai’s complex coastal terrain, the project involves advanced tunnelling techniques and machinery. According to an official statement issued by MMRDA on March 27, construction has recently crossed a key milestone.

“Purpose-built for Mumbai’s challenging coastal geology, the Tunnel Boring Machine — India’s largest slurry shield TBM for an urban road tunnel — achieved a crucial breakthrough recently, and has since advanced rapidly, excavating an impressive 70 metres within a few days.”

The tunnel boring machine (TBM), which is central to the project’s execution, was deployed on December 3, 2025. Since then, work has progressed steadily, with authorities highlighting the pace of excavation following the breakthrough.

Once operational, the tunnel is expected to provide a faster and more efficient alternative for commuters travelling between South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs. By offering a direct underground route, the project aims to reduce reliance on congested surface roads and substantially cut travel time.

Officials believe the tunnel will play a key role in improving urban mobility in Mumbai, particularly by enhancing connectivity between major arterial corridors and supporting smoother vehicular movement across the city’s core areas.
