Ashwini Bhide Becomes First Woman To Lead BMC As Commissioner

PC: Mid-day

Ashwini Bhide has been appointed as the first woman commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), marking a significant milestone in the civic body’s history. Her appointment comes following the retirement of incumbent commissioner Bhushan Gagrani on March 31, 2026.

A 1995-batch IAS officer, Bhide is currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office. Over the years, she has built a strong reputation for handling large-scale infrastructure projects and complex urban initiatives.

She is widely recognised for her tenure as Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL), where she played a pivotal role in pushing forward Mumbai’s expanding metro network. One of the most high-profile aspects of her tenure was her involvement in the Aarey car shed project, which sparked criticism from environmental groups due to concerns over tree cutting and ecological impact.

With her appointment, Bhide is expected to serve a full term extending until 2030, giving her a substantial window to influence Mumbai’s urban governance and infrastructure development. Her leadership comes at a time when the city is grappling with challenges such as rapid urbanisation, infrastructure upgrades, and climate resilience.

According to reports, several other senior bureaucrats were also considered for the role, including Sanjay Mukherjee, Aseem Gupta, and Milind Mhaiskar. However, the final decision ultimately went in Bhide’s favour.

Her elevation to the top post is seen as a landmark moment for Mumbai’s civic administration, reflecting both her administrative experience and the growing role of women in leadership positions within India’s public institutions.
