Mumbai Metro 3 Plans 3 Km Underground Walkway Network Linking BKC, Worli & Key Hubs

Authorities are working on an ambitious underground pedestrian network connected to Mumbai Metro Line 3, aimed at improving last-mile connectivity across some of the city’s busiest districts.

According to a Mid-day report, the proposal outlines a network of subterranean walkways branching out from major metro stations to nearby commercial complexes, public landmarks and transport nodes. The plan is designed to enable smoother and safer pedestrian movement in high-density areas.

The proposed corridors will extend from stations at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and the Nehru Science Centre area, offering direct connectivity to prominent destinations such as the Nehru Planetarium and the Worli Promenade. In total, the underground network is expected to cover nearly 3 kilometres.

To take the project forward, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited has invited bids for design and project management consultancy services for the construction of these underground subways and station vestibules. The initiative aims to integrate metro stations seamlessly with surrounding buildings and public spaces.

As per preliminary plans, two tunnels will originate from the Science Centre station. One corridor, around 1.1 km long, is expected to pass through the Mahalaxmi Racecourse area and extend towards Worli promenade. Another shorter passage of about 500 metres will directly connect to the Nehru Planetarium.

Additionally, a longer underground stretch of approximately 1.4 km is proposed from BKC station, linking it to the upcoming high-speed rail terminal near the Bharat Diamond Bourse.

Urban mobility experts believe such infrastructure could significantly reshape commuting patterns in dense business districts. The project also aligns with transit-oriented development strategies that encourage direct physical integration between metro stations and nearby developments.
