MMRDA Chief Sanjay Mukherjee Reviews Metro 2B, 9 Before April 3 Rollout

Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, has conducted a detailed inspection of Mumbai Metro Line 2B and Mumbai Metro Line 9, confirming their readiness ahead of the scheduled April 3 inauguration.

According to MMRDA, final safety checks have been completed for both corridors, marking a crucial step before the commencement of passenger services. The inspection covered key infrastructure elements, safety systems, and operational preparedness. Officials stated that both lines meet all required safety standards and are ready for public use.

Metro Line 2B Nears First Phase Opening

The first phase of Metro Line 2B includes a 5.53-km stretch connecting Chembur East to Mandale, with five stations set to become operational. This segment is expected to significantly enhance eastward connectivity within Mumbai, particularly for commuters travelling across central and eastern suburbs.

Once fully completed, Metro Line 2B will span 20 stations from ESIC Nagar in Andheri West to Mandale in Mankhurd. The corridor is designed to integrate with multiple transport systems, including Mumbai Metro Line 1 at DN Nagar, Mumbai Metro Line 3 at ITO Junction, Mumbai Metro Line 4 at Kurla East, as well as the Chembur Monorail and Mumbai Suburban Railway at Mankhurd. The project has been developed at an estimated cost of Rs 10,986 crore.

Metro Line 9 Expansion to Benefit Northern Suburbs

Metro Line 9 is also set for rollout in this phase, with four stations expected to open between Dahisar East and Kashigaon. The corridor will improve connectivity for residents in the northern suburbs and nearby Thane region.

Line 9 functions as an extension of Mumbai Metro Line 7, which currently operates between Gundavali and Dahisar East. Future expansion under Mumbai Metro Line 7A will connect Gundavali to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, though timelines for this segment remain unannounced.

With these developments, Mumbai’s metro network continues to expand rapidly, aiming to ease congestion, reduce travel time, and improve connectivity across key urban corridors.
