Mumbai’s metro network is on the brink of a major expansion, with nearly 10 km of new stretches scheduled to open on April 3. With these additions, the city’s operational network is approaching the 90 km mark, marking a significant step forward in its rapid transit growth.
The upcoming launch includes partial sections of Metro Line 9—marking the first metro connectivity for Mira Bhayandar—as well as stretches of Line 2B in the eastern suburbs. Currently, Mumbai has close to 80 km of functional metro corridors spread across seven lines, including the underground Aqua Line (Line 3), which was rolled out in phases between 2024 and 2025.
Looking ahead, the pace of expansion is expected to accelerate further over the next two years. In 2026 alone, around 40–50 km of additional metro lines are likely to become operational, largely in a phased manner. Key developments include the full commissioning of Line 9 connecting Dahisar East to Mira Bhayandar, along with partial openings on Line 4 and 4A linking Wadala to Thane.
Other corridors expected to see progress include Line 2B extending towards Chembur, Line 5 connecting Thane and Bhiwandi, and parts of Line 6 between Lokhandwala and Vikhroli. With these additions, Mumbai’s total operational metro network is projected to exceed 120 km by the end of the year.
This expansion marks a crucial phase in the city’s transport evolution, as multiple corridors begin to interlink, gradually shaping a more comprehensive and accessible urban transit system. With 2027 seen as a potential turning point, Mumbai could finally see the emergence of a more connected, city-wide metro network that significantly eases daily commuting challenges.
