Byculla Zoo Sees Rise In Visitors, Yet Falls Short Of Past Highs

The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Vanaspati Udyan and Zoo has recorded a slight improvement in visitor numbers and earnings over the past year, although it continues to trail behind its earlier peak performance.

According to data released by zoo authorities, the facility welcomed 25.42 lakh visitors between April 2025 and March 2026, generating revenue of Rs 9.85 crore. This reflects a growth of over seven percent compared to the previous financial year, when footfall dropped to 23.57 lakh visitors and revenue stood at Rs 9.18 crore — the lowest recorded in the last three years.

Despite this recovery, overall numbers remain below the levels seen before the recent dip. In the 2024–25 period, the highest attendance was observed in November, largely driven by school holidays, which typically bring in a surge of young visitors and families.

Located in Mumbai, the zoo has long been one of the city’s key recreational and educational attractions. However, fluctuating visitor trends in recent years have raised concerns about its ability to regain its earlier popularity.

Officials have credited the recent uptick to targeted outreach efforts carried out in partnership with non-governmental organisations and educational institutions. These initiatives have helped draw more school groups and organised visits, contributing to the gradual rise in footfall.

While the increase in numbers offers some encouragement, authorities acknowledge that the zoo still has a considerable journey ahead before it can return to its previous highs. Sustained engagement programmes, improved visitor experiences, and continued collaborations are expected to play a crucial role in maintaining growth momentum in the coming years.
