CIDCO Initiates Feasibility Study For Third Runway At Navi Mumbai Airport

In a move aimed at strengthening future aviation capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, CIDCO has appointed a joint venture between RITES Limited and Creative Group LLP to undertake a techno-commercial feasibility study for a proposed third runway at Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The study will assess key parameters, including technical viability, operational efficiency, environmental impact, and financial feasibility. The objective is to determine how an additional runway could enhance the airport’s long-term capacity and performance.

A high-level meeting to discuss the scope and direction of the study was attended by Anil Aswani of RITES Ltd. and Gurpreet Singh Shah of Creative Group LLP. The initiative comes at a time when air traffic demand in the region is expected to rise significantly, prompting authorities to plan infrastructure well in advance.

The proposed third runway is seen as a strategic addition that could substantially increase the airport’s handling capacity for both passenger and cargo traffic. Once operational, Navi Mumbai International Airport—one of India’s largest greenfield aviation projects—is expected to play a pivotal role in easing congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and supporting the region’s growing connectivity needs.

Officials view the development as part of a broader vision to establish a robust dual-airport system for Mumbai, with NMIA complementing existing operations in the city. By expanding infrastructure in line with projected demand, planners aim to position the airport as a key international gateway, capable of meeting future aviation requirements while improving overall efficiency.
