“It Felt Like Freedom”: Viral Video Highlights Mumbai Metro’s Wheelchair Accessibility

A viral video by Mumbai-based comedian Karn Shah has highlighted the growing accessibility of the city’s metro system, showcasing how inclusive infrastructure can transform everyday travel for people with disabilities.

Shared on social media, the video captures Shah independently navigating a metro journey—from entering the station to boarding the train to exiting at his destination. The clip highlights key accessibility features across the Mumbai Metro, including elevators, wheelchair-friendly ticket counters, and assistance from trained staff.

The video begins with a police officer guiding Shah to a lift, reflecting the support system in place for passengers with mobility challenges. He then proceeds to the ticket counter, which is designed at an accessible height, allowing him to purchase a ticket without help. The seamless journey continues as he boards and exits the train safely, demonstrating how the system is designed to accommodate independent travel.

His caption struck a chord online, reading: “For most, it’s just a metro ride. For me, it felt like freedom,” sparking widespread appreciation for inclusive public infrastructure.

“For most, it’s just a metro ride. For me, it felt like freedom. No waiting. No struggling. No ‘can someone help?’ Just me, my wheelchair, and independence. Thank you @devendra_fadnavis @mumbaimetro @official_mmmocl @mumbaimetro3 for making it accessible and keeping us, the minority in mind.”

The post quickly gained traction, with many users applauding both Shah’s experience and the broader push towards accessibility in urban transport.

Beyond infrastructure, the video has ignited conversations around dignity and independence, emphasising that accessibility is not just about physical design, but about enabling equal participation in public life.
