Metro Line 6 Hits Key Milestone as Girder Work Over Western Railway Set to Begin

Mumbai’s long-delayed Metro Line 6 has moved a step closer to completion, with authorities preparing to undertake one of the project’s final and most complex engineering tasks. According to a Mid-day report, work will begin on installing steel girders across the Western Railway corridor, a crucial milestone that has held up progress on the elevated line.

Spanning 15.31 km, the corridor will connect Swami Samarth Nagar in Andheri to Vikhroli along the Eastern Express Highway. While most of the civil construction is already complete, pending sections involving crossings over both Western and Central Railway lines have remained a bottleneck.

Railway officials confirmed that a major block will be undertaken overnight to facilitate the girder launching work. The operation is scheduled to run for nearly 10 hours, from 10.15 pm on 25 April to 8.15 am on 26 April. During this period, work will take place between Jogeshwari and Ram Mandir stations on the sixth line, as well as at Dahisar.

A Western Railway spokesperson said the block is essential to enable the safe installation of girders and marks a significant step towards completing the line. However, the exercise will impact suburban train services, with several local trains expected to be cancelled. Commuters have been advised to check station notices for detailed schedules.

Once operational, Metro Line 6 is expected to significantly ease congestion on the heavily used Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road. The line will feature 13 stations and offer key interchanges with multiple metro corridors, including Line 2A at Bangur Nagar, Line 7 at JVLR, Line 3 at Aarey Depot and Line 4 at Gandhi Nagar.

The project is seen as a critical addition to Mumbai’s expanding metro network, aimed at improving east-west connectivity across the city’s suburbs.
