Dadar’s Historic Shivaji Park Set For Modern Facelift As Redevelopment Work Gets Underway

Renovation and upgradation work is currently underway at the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park in Dadar, one of central Mumbai’s most prominent public open spaces. The initiative is aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing user experience for walkers, joggers, athletes, and residents who regularly use the ground.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had earlier sanctioned an expenditure of Rs 2.1 crore for the redevelopment and facelift of the park precinct. Work on the project was observed in progress on Tuesday as part of a broader plan to modernise the iconic recreational space.

The upgradation plan focuses on improving the overall walkability of the surrounding footpaths, upgrading existing recreational zones, and introducing new aesthetic and visitor-friendly features, including a decorative water fountain that is expected to serve as a visual attraction within the park.

The civic body has proposed a total of 10 civil and electrical works under the redevelopment project, all designed to improve facilities for daily users such as joggers and walkers. The initiative aims to make the space more functional while retaining its historic and cultural significance.

Shivaji Park, which spans around 28 acres and features a 1.3-kilometre-long promenade along its periphery, is recognised as the largest open public space in Mumbai’s island city. It has long served as a key recreational and social hub for residents across the city.

The park is also home to several fitness and sporting facilities, including gymnasiums and yoga centres. Among these, the Shivaji Park Gymkhana remains one of the most popular institutions associated with the ground, attracting a large number of regular users.

The ongoing redevelopment work is expected to improve accessibility, enhance visual appeal, and provide a more structured environment for recreation without altering the park’s traditional character. Officials have indicated that the project is part of a broader effort to upgrade key public spaces across Mumbai, ensuring better amenities and improved urban infrastructure for citizens.

Once completed, the modernised Shivaji Park is expected to offer a more comfortable and organised experience for its large daily footfall while continuing to preserve its identity as one of Mumbai’s most iconic and historically significant open spaces.
