The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 147 garbage-vulnerable locations across Mumbai and initiated ward-level action plans to address persistent dumping issues through intensified clean-up operations, CCTV surveillance and stricter enforcement measures.
The civic body said the campaign aims to tackle chronic waste accumulation in high-footfall areas and densely populated informal settlements where garbage collection remains a challenge. Authorities also plan to strengthen public awareness and behaviour-change initiatives alongside improved waste management systems.
According to the BMC, the highest number of vulnerable garbage points has been identified in the M/West ward, which includes areas such as Chedha Nagar, Chembur and Tilak Nagar, accounting for 37 locations. P/North ward, covering Malad and Malwani, has 12 such spots, while G/North areas including Dadar, Dharavi and N ward regions like Ghatkopar account for 10 locations each. M/East areas such as Deonar and Mankhurd, along with F/North localities including Matunga, Sion and Wadala, recorded nine vulnerable sites each.
Mumbai generates nearly 6,300 to 6,500 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste every day, with a substantial portion collected from these garbage-prone locations. Civic officials said many of these spots are situated in crowded areas or informal settlements where waste collection vehicles face limited accessibility, resulting in recurring unmanaged dumping and sanitation concerns.
The BMC stated that ward-level teams have now been directed to identify the causes behind waste accumulation at each location and implement targeted interventions to permanently eliminate such dumping points. Officials added that unauthorised dumping will attract penalties and stricter monitoring.
“We will map each location, identify the cause, and impose penalties in cases of unauthorised dumping. Targeted interventions will be implemented to shut these spots for good,” an official said.
As part of the initiative, the civic body will also expand waste collection services and install CCTV cameras at vulnerable sites to discourage repeat dumping offences and improve overall cleanliness standards across the city.
