BMC Approves Rs 418 Crore Cable-Stayed Bridge Over Goregaon Creek To Ease City Traffic

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved the construction of a six-lane cable-stayed bridge over Goregaon Creek as part of a major infrastructure initiative aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across Mumbai’s western suburbs.

According to reports, the project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 418.53 crore and is expected to provide significant relief to commuters travelling through some of the city’s busiest suburban corridors.

The proposed bridge will span 542 metres in total length and include a 238-metre cable-stayed section designed using advanced engineering technology. The structure will have a width of 28.55 metres and support six traffic lanes to facilitate smoother vehicular movement.

Apart from the main transport corridor, the bridge design also includes 1.5-metre-wide utility corridors on both sides. These dedicated spaces will accommodate civic infrastructure such as pipelines and utility cables, allowing maintenance work to be carried out without disrupting traffic flow.

Civic officials have set a 36-month deadline for project completion, excluding monsoon periods, with the bridge expected to become operational by October 2028. Authorities stated that the work will be executed under strict timelines to avoid delays and ensure faster traffic relief for daily commuters.

Once completed, the bridge is expected to improve traffic circulation and reduce congestion in key suburban areas, including Andheri, Oshiwara, Lokhandwala and Goregaon.

The infrastructure project had reportedly faced delays of nearly three years due to pending environmental approvals from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority because of its proximity to protected mangrove areas.

As part of environmental clearance conditions, the BMC has been directed to plant 444 mangroves to compensate for the proposed cutting of 31 trees during construction.

The Bombay High Court granted final approval for the project in May 2025, paving the way for construction work to begin. Officials believe the bridge will play a crucial role in improving suburban mobility and reducing travel time across western Mumbai.
