Hubballi-Dharwad Delegation Visits Mumbai To Study BMC’s Civic Administration Model

A delegation from the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation visited the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to examine Mumbai’s urban governance systems, civic infrastructure, and municipal administration practices, reflecting growing collaboration between Indian cities on urban management.

The visit focused on understanding how the BMC, regarded as India’s wealthiest civic body with a budget exceeding that of several smaller States, manages large-scale urban challenges and public services.

Led by Hubballi-Dharwad Mayor Jyoti Patil, the delegation held meetings with senior BMC officials and reviewed the operations of several major civic departments. The team also met Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde during the visit.

Other members of the delegation included Deputy Mayor Santosh Chavan, Leader of the House and former Mayor Iresh Anchatgeri, Opposition Leader Imam Hussain Yaligar and Deputy Commissioner (Development) Vijaykumar R.

At the BMC headquarters, officials from multiple departments delivered presentations on Mumbai’s civic governance framework and administrative systems. These included briefings from the Municipal Secretary Department, Business Development Department, Solid Waste Management Department, Environment Department and Infrastructure Department.

The discussions centred on improving urban infrastructure, strengthening public amenities, enhancing sanitation and healthcare services, and modernising waste management systems. Officials also exchanged ideas on making city administrations more efficient, technology-driven and citizen-focused as urban populations continue to grow.

The visit comes at a time when rapidly developing Indian cities are increasingly looking at collaborative governance and institutional knowledge-sharing to address issues related to infrastructure, public health, emergency response and urban planning.

According to officials, the Hubballi-Dharwad delegation appreciated the scale of operations and functioning of the BMC and showed interest in expanding cooperation and institutional exchanges in the future.

The interaction is being viewed as part of wider efforts among urban local bodies to adopt best practices and improve municipal governance through inter-city partnerships and administrative learning initiatives.
