Colaba Residents Raise Concerns Over Taxi Stands, Allege Refusals, Overcharging & Illegal Parking

A dispute has emerged in Colaba, with residents alleging that taxi drivers are misusing designated taxi stands near some of South Mumbai’s most prominent landmarks by treating them as long-term parking spaces and refusing service to local commuters.

The issue revolves around two taxi stands located on BEST Marg near the Diplomat Hotel. Members of the Clean Heritage Colaba Residents’ Association claim that numerous taxis remain parked on the stretch for extended periods, occupying public road space and contributing to traffic congestion.

The association has submitted complaints to the Mumbai Police, Traffic Police, Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), seeking immediate intervention. Residents argue that the road serves as a key access route to the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and other important establishments but is increasingly being used as a parking hub by outstation taxi operators.

“The taxis remain parked there throughout the day and night, occupying public road space and disrupting traffic movement,” said Pervez Cooper, vice-president of the Clean Heritage Colaba Residents’ Association.

Residents further allege that local passengers, including senior citizens and office-goers, are often denied rides, while tourists are prioritised.

“Senior citizens, office-goers and local commuters are frequently turned away, while foreign tourists are readily accommodated, often at fares negotiated well above the meter rate,” Cooper said.

Sharing a personal experience, resident Rocky Lobo said, “My sister came from the USA and wanted to go from Colaba to Fort. A taxi driver demanded Rs 400 for a trip of barely four kilometres. She boarded another taxi and paid Rs 40.”

Residents have also raised concerns over security, citing the area’s proximity to locations affected during the 26/11 attacks. They have sought verification of taxi stand permissions, scrutiny of vehicle registrations and action against drivers refusing passengers.

Traffic Inspector Sanjay Deshmukh said, “We have received the complaint and have been taking action against errant taxi drivers. Action has also been taken against some drivers who park their vehicles at the stand.”

He added that any decision regarding removal of the taxi stands would require consultation between the police, BMC and RTO.
