Mumbai’s landmark Coastal Road promenade is a step closer to becoming a continuous waterfront corridor, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) moving ahead with a Rs 12.15-crore project to complete a critical missing section in Worli.
The proposed work involves constructing a 320-metre-long and 8-metre-wide promenade-cum-access road connecting Lotus Jetty and Samudra Mahal near Baroda Palace. Once completed, the project will bridge the only remaining gap along the 7.5-kilometre seafront promenade developed as part of the Mumbai Coastal Road initiative.
According to civic officials, the construction is expected to be completed within six months, including the monsoon season. The contract is likely to be awarded to M/s Forcon Infra Pvt. Ltd., which emerged as the sole bidder during the tendering process.
Currently, pedestrians, joggers and cyclists can travel along an uninterrupted stretch of the promenade from Priyadarshini Park to Lotus Jetty. However, the route presently ends at Lotus Jetty due to the presence of a navigation bridge, requiring visitors to exit the promenade and re-enter it further ahead near Baroda Palace.
The new link will remove this interruption, creating a seamless public waterfront experience along the coastal corridor. Urban planners and civic authorities believe the completed promenade will further enhance the recreational appeal of Mumbai’s western coastline while improving accessibility for residents and visitors.
Beyond its leisure and tourism benefits, the project is also expected to serve important operational functions. The access road will facilitate emergency movement to a proposed police outpost and fire brigade facility planned near the Samudra Mahal area, strengthening emergency response capabilities along the waterfront.
The connectivity improvement will also benefit several surrounding residential and commercial neighbourhoods, including Samudra Mahal, Poonam Chambers, Shivsagar Estate, Lotus Colony and Lala Lajpatrai Colony.
With work on the final missing segment set to begin soon, the Coastal Road promenade is poised to evolve into one of Mumbai’s most prominent public spaces, offering uninterrupted access along a major stretch of the city’s coastline while enhancing urban mobility and civic infrastructure.
