Mumbai Metro Line 4 Nears Launch As Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction Stretch Secures RDSO Approval

A key section of Mumbai Metro Line 4 has achieved an important milestone, with the 10.5-kilometre Gaimukh–Cadbury Junction corridor receiving certification from the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), paving the way for the next stage of regulatory approvals before passenger operations begin.

The approval follows an extensive period of testing and evaluation carried out by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Over the past six months, the corridor underwent multiple trial runs and technical assessments to verify operational readiness, system performance and compliance with prescribed railway standards.

With the RDSO certification now in place, MMRDA is preparing to seek the final statutory clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), whose approval is mandatory before commercial services can commence on the route.

The Gaimukh–Cadbury Junction section forms part of the larger Metro Line 4 and Metro 4A network, which is designed to connect Wadala in Mumbai with Kasarvadavali in Thane. The corridor is expected to play a significant role in strengthening public transport infrastructure across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region while reducing travel time and easing traffic congestion on key road networks connecting Mumbai and Thane.

According to MMRDA officials, an application requesting a CMRS inspection will be submitted shortly. Following the safety inspection and approval process, passenger services on the corridor are expected to begin.

The development marks a major step forward for one of the region’s most anticipated metro projects. Metro Line 4 has witnessed several construction and execution challenges over the years, resulting in delays to its original timeline. However, the latest certification indicates that the project is entering its final stages before the opening of its first operational segment.

Once fully operational, Metro Line 4 is expected to provide a faster, more efficient and sustainable mode of transportation for commuters travelling between Mumbai and Thane, while further expanding the city’s rapidly growing metro network.
