Chendani-Koliwada Residents Oppose Thane Metro Alignment, Seek Alternative Route

Residents of Chendani-Koliwada in Thane have stepped up their opposition to the proposed Thane Internal Metro project, demanding a review of the planned alignment and urging authorities to consider alternative routes that would minimise the impact on the local community.

During a recent protest, residents expressed concerns that the proposed metro corridor could affect numerous homes, commercial establishments and community spaces within the historic Koli settlement. Protesters maintained that while they support infrastructure development and improved public transport, they are opposed to any project that could lead to displacement or adversely affect livelihoods in the area.

Members of the community called on the state government and project authorities to engage directly with affected residents before moving ahead with the project. They urged officials to conduct detailed consultations and explore route modifications that would reduce disruption to existing neighbourhoods.

The Thane Internal Metro project has been proposed to strengthen intra-city connectivity and improve public transportation across Thane. However, the project has faced growing resistance from resident groups and citizen organisations over the past several months.

Critics of the proposed alignment have raised concerns regarding its potential social, environmental and economic consequences. Several groups have also sought greater transparency in the planning and decision-making process, arguing that affected communities should be given a larger role in discussions surrounding the project.

The latest demonstration by Chendani-Koliwada residents reflects the increasing opposition to the metro corridor in its current form. Community members reiterated that development projects should be implemented in a manner that balances infrastructure needs with the protection of long-established settlements and local heritage.

As discussions around the project continue, residents have called for a collaborative approach that prioritises both urban mobility and the interests of communities that could be directly affected by the proposed metro alignment.
