Mumbai-Built High-Speed Passenger Vessel ‘Ocean Crewzer 8’ Launched To Boost India’s Maritime Connectivity

Mumbai-based shipbuilding and maritime services company SHM Group has launched Ocean Crewzer 8 (Y-410), an indigenous high-speed passenger vessel developed entirely at its shipyard in Mumbai. The launch marks another step forward in India’s efforts to strengthen domestic shipbuilding capabilities and enhance maritime connectivity through locally manufactured vessels.

Measuring 29 metres in length, the aluminium-built craft has been designed to cater to the growing needs of India’s coastal and inland water transport sectors. The vessel forms part of SHM Group’s broader shipbuilding programme aimed at developing specialised vessels tailored to the country’s evolving maritime requirements.

Constructed entirely within SHM’s facilities, Ocean Crewzer 8 reflects the increasing emphasis on self-reliance in shipbuilding under India’s maritime development initiatives. The use of aluminium offers several operational advantages, including reduced weight, improved fuel efficiency and higher speeds compared to conventional steel vessels. The material has become widely preferred for modern passenger ferries globally due to its performance and sustainability benefits.

The launch comes as India continues to invest in coastal shipping, inland waterways and port modernisation projects. Industry experts believe vessels of this nature can play a significant role in improving regional connectivity and supporting environmentally efficient transport solutions.

Commenting on the achievement, Saifuddin Hajee, Chairman and Managing Director, SHM Group, said, “Every vessel we launch is a result of steady, disciplined work by our team. Ocean Crewzer 8 was built at our own yard, on schedule and to a standard we stand by. As a company with a legacy of over 100 years in this industry, we remain committed to building vessels and giving impetus to the Aatmanirbhar spirit.”

The vessel underwent extensive engineering, testing and quality assurance procedures throughout its construction. Prior to launch, multiple safety inspections and technical evaluations were carried out. The final launch operation was executed using two 300-tonne cranes, ensuring a carefully coordinated and controlled entry into the water.

The successful launch highlights the growing capability of Indian shipyards to design and manufacture advanced vessels domestically while supporting the vision of a stronger maritime manufacturing ecosystem.
