The proposed extension of Mumbai’s Harbour Line between Goregaon and Borivali has moved ahead with Western Railway issuing a tender worth Rs 86.51 crore for key civil construction works under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3A.
Issued on May 27, the tender covers a range of preliminary infrastructure activities essential for the development of the new railway corridor. The scope of work includes earthwork, construction of major and minor bridges, drainage infrastructure, retaining walls and boundary protection works along the proposed alignment.
The civil package forms a crucial component of the larger Goregaon–Borivali Harbour Line extension project, which is estimated to cost approximately Rs 898 crore. According to project estimates, civil construction accounts for nearly Rs 728 crore of the overall expenditure, while signalling and electrical systems are expected to require investments of around Rs 82 crore and Rs 88 crore respectively.
Once operational, the new corridor will establish a direct rail link between Goregaon and Borivali, offering commuters an alternative route and helping ease pressure on the heavily utilised Western Railway suburban network.
Engineering plans for the project currently include the construction of two major bridges and sixteen minor bridges. While approvals for some bridge designs are still pending, work on detailed engineering and structural planning is progressing.
Land acquisition and rehabilitation remain among the project’s most significant challenges. Authorities require approximately 3,688 square metres of land for the corridor, a substantial portion of which is privately owned.
Project officials have identified 520 individuals who will be affected by the development. Rehabilitation units have already been allotted to 178 beneficiaries as part of the resettlement process. In addition, more than 140 families residing on privately owned land are expected to be impacted by the project.
The Harbour Line extension is expected to improve east-west suburban rail connectivity and support Mumbai’s growing transportation needs by providing additional capacity on the city’s rail network.
