In a significant step towards creating public infrastructure in central Mumbai, the F-South ward of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has cleared encroachments from a reserved plot in the Meghwadi–Lalbaug–Parel area, bringing to an end a 12-year effort to reclaim the land for civic use.
The 7,872.14-square-metre plot has been earmarked under the Development Plan (DP) 2034 for the development of a municipal school and a recreational ground. Once fully developed, the project is expected to benefit more than 50,000 residents from Lalbaug, Parel, Kalachowki and adjoining neighbourhoods, where access to open spaces remains limited.
According to civic officials, approximately 274 square metres of the reserved land had been occupied by 13 tenants residing in structures on the site. Before initiating the demolition process, the civic administration followed its rehabilitation policy by offering eligible occupants either alternative accommodation or financial compensation based on prevailing Ready Reckoner rates. Notices were also issued to all affected parties in advance.
As part of the ongoing clearance drive, seven of the 13 structures have already been demolished. Action against the remaining six structures is expected to be undertaken shortly, paving the way for the long-awaited implementation of the public amenities planned on the site.
Officials stated that the removal of encroachments marks a major milestone in unlocking land reserved for community infrastructure in one of Mumbai’s densely populated localities. The proposed school and recreational ground are expected to address the area’s growing demand for educational and open-space facilities.
The demolition operation was carried out with the support of two JCB machines, a dumper, an ambulance and other equipment. Around 45 civic personnel participated in the exercise, while adequate police deployment was arranged to ensure that the operation proceeded smoothly and without disruption.
With the majority of encroachments now removed, civic authorities are expected to move forward with plans for developing the reserved plot in accordance with the objectives of DP 2034.
