The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved a major infrastructure project aimed at strengthening connectivity between Thane and Navi Mumbai with the construction of a new cable-stayed bridge across Thane Creek.
Estimated to cost Rs 723.42 crore, the proposed bridge will span approximately 1.4 kilometres and connect Kopri in Thane East with the Patni Road–Airoli Knowledge Park corridor in Navi Mumbai. The project is expected to provide an additional cross-creek link, helping ease traffic congestion and improving travel efficiency between two of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s fastest-growing urban centres.
Designed as a cable-stayed structure, the bridge will allow for longer uninterrupted spans while reducing the number of supports required within the creek. This engineering approach is expected to minimise environmental impact while creating a high-capacity transport corridor capable of handling increasing traffic volumes.
Authorities believe the project will play a crucial role in reducing congestion at Kopri, one of the region’s most heavily burdened transport nodes. The area has emerged as a major bottleneck due to its proximity to key transport infrastructure, including the Eastern Express Highway, Thane Railway Station and several arterial roads connecting Thane with Navi Mumbai.
Growing urbanisation and rising commuter movement between residential neighbourhoods in Thane and employment hubs in Navi Mumbai have further intensified traffic pressure in the corridor over the years.
The new bridge is expected to provide faster access to important commercial destinations such as Airoli Knowledge Park and surrounding business districts. By creating a more direct route between Thane East and Navi Mumbai, the project could significantly reduce travel times and improve overall network efficiency.
The initiative forms part of MMRDA’s broader strategy to strengthen transportation infrastructure across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Regional planners have identified the need for additional creek crossings as development continues to expand across Thane, Navi Mumbai and adjoining growth corridors.
Officials also expect the bridge to improve the resilience of the transport network by offering an alternative route to existing crossings, reducing dependency on current infrastructure and enhancing mobility during peak traffic periods.
Beyond easing congestion, the project is anticipated to support economic activity by facilitating smoother movement of people, goods and services between residential, commercial and industrial zones. Once completed, the bridge is expected to become a critical component of the region’s transport network and support future urban growth across the Thane-Navi Mumbai corridor.
