Nearly 15 years after it was first proposed, the Maharashtra government has granted approval for Navi Mumbai Metro Line 2, paving the way for the long-awaited project with a budgetary allocation of Rs 5,575 crore. The 8.15-km metro corridor, originally conceptualised by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) in 2011, will connect Taloja and Khandeshwar, strengthening public transport across key growth corridors in Navi Mumbai.
The upcoming metro line is expected to significantly improve connectivity for rapidly developing residential and industrial areas, including Kamothe, Kalamboli and Taloja. It will also enhance access to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is emerging as a major transportation and commercial hub within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Officials believe the corridor will improve intra-city mobility while integrating with the region’s expanding transport network.
Metro Line 2 will feature eight stations at Khandeshwar, Sector 10 Kamothe, Sector 2E Kalamboli, Sector 7E Kalamboli, Sector 13 Kalamboli, Kasadi, MIDC Station 1 and MIDC Station 2. The alignment has been planned to cater to both residential communities and industrial clusters, addressing increasing travel demand driven by rapid urbanisation.
When the project was first proposed in 2011, its estimated cost stood at around ₹1,605 crore. However, revisions in project scope, rising construction costs and additional infrastructure requirements have increased the total project estimate to ₹5,575 crore. The latest state budget allocation provides the financial backing required to move the project towards implementation.
The corridor will connect with the operational Belapur–Pendhar Metro line, although a 2.2-km missing link between the two corridors is yet to receive separate approval. Authorities have also discussed developing a future spur line to directly connect the airport corridor.
With financial clearance now in place, Navi Mumbai Metro Line 2 becomes the second approved corridor in the city’s planned metro network, marking another milestone in the region’s ongoing urban transport and infrastructure expansion.
