Airoli-Katai Elevated Road Nears Opening, Set To Cut Navi Mumbai-Dombivli Travel Time To 15 Minutes

Commuters travelling through some of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s busiest traffic corridors are set to benefit as the first two phases of the Airoli-Katai Naka Elevated Road Project near completion. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced that the initial phases of the project are in the final stages and are expected to be opened to traffic soon.

The 12.71-km elevated corridor is one of the region’s major road infrastructure projects. Once fully operational, it will reduce the distance between Airoli and Dombivli by nearly 10 kilometres and cut travel time between Navi Mumbai and Dombivli from 30-45 minutes to around 15 minutes.

According to MMRDA, Phase One, a 3.45-km stretch connecting Thane-Belapur Road with National Highway-4 (NH-4), has crossed 92 per cent completion, with only finishing work remaining. Phase Two, covering 2.57 kilometres between Airoli and Thane-Belapur Road, has been completed. Both sections are expected to be inaugurated together in July before being opened for public use.

The elevated corridor is expected to provide significant relief to motorists travelling through major congestion points such as Mahape, Shilphata, Kalyan Phata and Thane-Belapur Road. By creating a seamless elevated connection, the project aims to improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays and lower fuel consumption for thousands of daily commuters.

MMRDA said the project has progressed through regular monitoring and review meetings. Member of Parliament Dr Shrikant Eknath Shinde has conducted multiple site inspections and review meetings with officials to oversee construction progress and expedite execution.

Beyond improving passenger travel, the corridor is also expected to strengthen connectivity between Navi Mumbai, Thane, Dombivli and Kalyan, benefiting both commuters and commercial traffic moving through the industrial belt.

With the opening of the first two phases expected in July, the Airoli-Katai Naka Elevated Road Project is poised to become a major addition to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s transport network, offering faster and smoother connectivity across one of the area’s most heavily congested road corridors.
