Mumbai is set to get a major traffic boost with the 1.2-km Dindoshi-Film City flyover likely to become operational by September. The new elevated corridor is expected to ease congestion on the heavily used Western Express Highway (WEH) by providing an alternative east-west route for commuters.
The flyover is the first phase of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) ambitious Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project. It will connect Dindoshi in the western suburbs with Film City in Goregaon, improving connectivity between key parts of the city.
The six-lane elevated structure begins near Dindoshi Court along the WEH and extends up to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. From there, motorists will be able to continue towards the eastern suburbs using the existing road network until the remaining sections of the GMLR are completed.
Once the next phase is ready, the flyover will connect directly to the twin tunnels of the GMLR, which are expected to open in 2027. The full 12.2-km corridor, comprising tunnels, bridges and interchanges, will eventually establish Mumbai’s first direct east-west road link between Goregaon and Mulund.
Designed at an estimated cost of around ₹300 crore, the flyover includes an elevated circular junction, walkways and deck slabs on both sides. The overall GMLR project is valued at nearly Rs 14,000 crore and is scheduled for completion by 2028.
Civil construction of the flyover has been completed, while finishing work, including painting, road surfacing, installation of traffic signals and signage, is currently in progress. The project was initially expected to open by the end of May but was delayed.
“This flyover will be the first phase of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road that will provide a smooth east-west passageway and decongest the Goregaon-Dindoshi areas that stay choked with traffic during peak hours. Once ready, motorists will be able to go under the tunnels of the road directly by taking this bridge,” said Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), BMC.
