The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set August 31, 2026, as the new target date for completing the long-pending Vidyavihar railway flyover, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving east-west connectivity in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.
During a recent site inspection, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar reviewed the progress of the project and directed contractors to expedite the remaining work while ensuring all safety standards are maintained. He also assessed the ongoing Mankhurd-Maharashtra Nagar flyover project and instructed agencies to deploy additional manpower and machinery to meet project timelines.
The four-lane Vidyavihar flyover will connect Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg with Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg, providing a direct east-west link across the railway tracks. The bridge spans around 650 metres, including the railway crossing and approach roads on both ends. Once operational, it is expected to ease congestion and offer commuters a faster alternative to existing road crossings.
According to BMC officials, nearly 80 per cent of the construction work has already been completed. The remaining works include girder launching over the pending railway spans, construction of deck slabs and deck sheeting, installation of anti-crash barriers and street lighting. Some activities will be carried out depending on weather conditions during the ongoing monsoon.
The project also includes improvements to infrastructure around Vidyavihar railway station. Existing ticket counters, the station master’s office and staircases connected to the foot overbridge have been rebuilt, while additional pedestrian access routes linking the station to nearby roads are also being developed.
Before the flyover is opened to traffic, the BMC will coordinate with the Mumbai Traffic Police and other civic departments to ensure smooth traffic movement along the approach roads. Officials have also been directed to identify and remove possible bottlenecks, including roadside obstructions, footpaths and landscaping elements.
Meanwhile, work on both arms of the Mankhurd-Maharashtra Nagar flyover has also been accelerated, with the BMC targeting completion by May 31, 2027. Once both projects are operational, they are expected to improve connectivity, reduce congestion and significantly ease travel across Mumbai’s eastern transport corridors.
