Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday inaugurated the revamped Kala Ghoda Art Avenue in South Mumbai, describing the project as a blend of heritage conservation, public art and modern urban infrastructure that enhances the city’s iconic cultural precinct while preserving its historic character.
The inauguration took place at the newly developed Kala Ghoda Plaza on B. Bharucha Marg, where the Chief Minister said the redesigned streetscape strengthens the appeal of one of Mumbai’s most renowned heritage districts without compromising its architectural and artistic identity.
Fadnavis expressed confidence that the upgraded public spaces would provide residents and visitors with a richer cultural experience while encouraging greater appreciation of the city’s heritage.
Highlighting the project, he described the precinct as a dedicated heritage walk, with every pathway and public space designed with artistic elements. He also appealed to citizens, tourists, and local businesses to help maintain the area and preserve its aesthetic appeal.
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar, Assembly Speaker Adv. Rahul Narwekar, Cultural Affairs Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, and several public representatives attended the inauguration ceremony.
The redevelopment covers several roads surrounding Mumbai’s UNESCO-listed Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensemble, including Saibaba Marg, Rope Walk Lane, Dr V.B. Gandhi Marg, Forbes Street, Rutherford Street and B. Bharucha Marg. The area is home to numerous heritage buildings, museums, and art galleries and is internationally recognised as the venue for the annual Kala Ghoda Arts Festival.
As part of the redevelopment, a new public plaza has been created at the B. Bharucha Marg junction using grey and black granite along with basalt paving. The upgraded precinct also features wider pedestrian-friendly pathways, outdoor seating areas, café-style public spaces and street art installations.
The project aims to improve the overall visitor experience while preserving the locality’s heritage value, making the Kala Ghoda precinct a more accessible and vibrant destination for residents, tourists, and art enthusiasts alike.
