A section of the sixth floor of an MHADA-cessed building in Mumbai’s Masjid Bunder area collapsed onto the floor below on Saturday afternoon, leaving one person injured. Emergency teams rushed to the site and safely rescued six people from the affected portion of the structure.
The incident occurred at around 12:34 pm at Lokhandwala Building, located on Vithaldas Chandan Street in Masjid Bunder.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a portion of the building’s sixth floor gave way and fell onto the fifth floor. The property is classified as an MHADA-cessed building, which typically refers to older structures covered under the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority’s repair and redevelopment framework.
Following the collapse, six occupants trapped in the affected section were rescued by emergency responders. One person sustained injuries during the incident and was taken to Noor Hospital for medical treatment. Authorities are yet to provide an update on the injured person’s condition.
Soon after the collapse was reported, multiple civic and emergency agencies reached the location to carry out rescue and safety operations. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), Mumbai Police, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), the 108 ambulance service, and officials from the local BMC ward office were deployed at the site.
Authorities cordoned off the affected area as a precautionary measure while rescue personnel assessed the structural condition of the building. Further inspections are expected to determine the cause of the partial collapse and evaluate whether additional sections of the building pose a safety risk.
The incident once again highlights concerns over the structural condition of ageing buildings across Mumbai, particularly several cessed properties that await repairs or redevelopment. Civic authorities are expected to carry out a detailed assessment before deciding on the next course of action.
