Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: Surat Station Nears Completion, BKC Work Progresses

Construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor is advancing across key sections, with work progressing at the Surat station and the underground station at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. The 508-km high-speed rail project is targeted to begin phased operations from August 2027.

Developed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the corridor will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad through Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Surat station takes shape

The Surat bullet train station is being developed with an architectural design inspired by the city’s association with the diamond industry.

According to the latest project update, the main structural work at the station has been completed, while interior and finishing activities are underway. Surat is among the 12 stations planned along the high-speed rail corridor.

BKC station construction underway

In Mumbai, work is progressing on the underground bullet train station at BKC, which will form a key component of the corridor’s Mumbai section.

The Mumbai portion includes extensive underground construction, including the tunnel between BKC and Shilphata. The project also includes a 7-km undersea tunnel section. Tunnel excavation is being carried out using tunnel boring technology.

At the BKC station site, underground construction has advanced, while foundation-related activities continue.

Gujarat section records progress

The Gujarat portion has also recorded substantial progress. Civil construction between Surat and Vapi has been completed, covering viaducts, station structures and other essential components of the corridor.

NHSRCL has previously stated that around 90% of the alignment is elevated. Much of the elevated section is being constructed using the Full Span Launching Method, allowing prefabricated bridge segments to be installed along the alignment.

508-km corridor to cut travel time

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor will span 508 km and use Japanese Shinkansen technology. The full journey is expected to take around two hours and seven minutes with limited stops at Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad.

The project is expected to commence phased operations from August 2027, with the Surat-Bilimora section likely to be among the first portions opened for passenger services.
