Kalyan Lok Sabha MP Dr Shrikant Shinde has called on the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to accelerate the implementation of the proposed double-decker Ranjnoli-Kalyan-Shilphata transport corridor, aimed at reducing traffic congestion along one of Thane district’s busiest routes.
The approximately 21-km corridor, stretching from Ranjnoli in Bhiwandi to Shilphata, is being planned as an integrated road-and-metro infrastructure project. Under the proposal, an elevated flyover would be constructed below the Metro 12 corridor, providing an additional route for vehicles and easing pressure on the existing Ranjnoli-Kalyan-Shilphata Road.
The issue was reviewed during a meeting at the MMRDA headquarters in Mumbai concerning major infrastructure projects in the Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency. Shinde instructed senior officials to complete the necessary permissions and administrative formalities for the elevated road on priority.
He also directed authorities to obtain land and approvals for proposed metro stations in advance to prevent delays in their construction. Officials were asked to prepare plans for approach and exit roads, connecting routes and traffic management measures alongside the flyover project.
Shinde emphasised that road construction should progress alongside Metro 12 work rather than being taken up as a separate phase. This, he said, would ensure that motorists can benefit from the alternative route as soon as possible.
The project assumes added importance as Metro 12 construction is already underway along the Kalyan-Shilphata Road, causing traffic disruptions at several points. The proposed double-decker system is expected to increase the route’s capacity while separating through traffic from local movement.
Once completed, the corridor could provide smoother connectivity between Bhiwandi, Kalyan-Dombivli, Ambernath-Badlapur, Shilphata, Navi Mumbai and Thane. Officials have also been asked to coordinate closely on technical matters, land acquisition and approvals to prevent implementation delays.
