Mumbai Sion Bridge Reconstruction Enters Final Phase, September 2026 Completion Target Set

The long-awaited reconstruction of Mumbai’s Sion Road Over Bridge has entered a crucial stage, with civic authorities directing agencies to complete the project by September 30, 2026. The revised deadline is significantly earlier than the earlier February 2027 target.

Located near Sion railway station, the bridge serves as an important east-west link connecting central Mumbai with the eastern suburbs and Dharavi. Its completion is expected to ease traffic pressure on surrounding roads and improve connectivity across the Sion-Dharavi corridor.

The reconstruction is being undertaken under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project Phase 2. Central Railway is responsible for the portion within railway limits, while the BMC Bridge Department is handling the approach roads. Close coordination between the agencies is essential to ensure the entire route becomes operational as a continuous corridor.

Construction has now progressed to the girder and deck stages. The second 500-tonne steel girder was launched across the operational railway corridor on August 9, following the installation of the first girder. Deck slab work is underway on the first span, with similar work on the second span expected after it is placed on its bearings.

The project also involves improvements to the approach roads. A connection is being developed between Lal Bahadur Shastri Road on the western side and Sant Rohidas Road towards Dharavi. However, work on the eastern approach remains linked to the availability of land currently being used for other purposes, making coordination and timely handover critical to meeting the deadline.

Pedestrian facilities are also being added as part of the wider connectivity plan. An underground walkway along Lal Bahadur Shastri Road opened in February, while another facility on Sant Rohidas Road became operational in July.

With the September deadline approaching, agencies face the challenge of maintaining construction speed while working around an operational railway corridor and resolving outstanding approach-road issues. The completed project is expected to benefit motorists, pedestrians and public transport users by restoring a vital link and improving overall mobility in the Sion area.
